This spring a documentary and book have been made about Vidal Sassoon, the hairdresser of almost every hip, hot and happening celeb in the sixties. Well, that’s all the information I have. The documentary seems to be made and was shown at a couple of film festivals, but it seems it’s not getting a screening for a wider audience. And absolutely no info on the book…. So, to fill the gap, a tiny compilation of his work.

Viddal Sassoon introduced dark, straight and shiny hair cuts. His haircuts were geometric yet organic, as shown in this video:

One of his most well know clients was fashion innovator Mary Quant.

Jip & Janneke Make Up

Ok, this will be a short introduction to Dutch culture to all our foreign readers

The most popular Dutch childeren’s book of all time is “Jip en Janneke” (pronounce: yip & jen-nu-ku; well, at least something like that). The books are written in the fifties by Annie M.G. Smidt and beautifully illustrated by Fiep Westendorp.

Why all this information? Dutch store Hema has introduced Jip & Janneke make up for grown-ups: lip gloss, bronzer, eye shadow and nail polish. I’m not a big fan of the colours, but the package is brilliant!

Primark Fall 2010 Preview

More Autumn collection previews, this time it’s Primark. Primark sometimes has brilliant stuff for almost nothing, but this time it somehow doesn’t impress me. The collection seems a bit random, and honestly, a bit boring. Pictures:

This is really funny: Courtney Love has participated with some friends to create a website showing all the outfits she wears. She’s not the author of www. whatcourtneyworetoday.com, but she sends her outfits by mail or phone on a daily (or so) basis to them, and they post it for her. The clothes are mostly big designer names, but I know she has a big vintage collection so I’m hoping we get a peek at that (please!).

Warehouse Fall 2010 Preview

One of my favorite stores, Warehouse, have given a preview of their Fall 2010 collection. It looks really good, I like the new ladylike knee lenght skirts, and yes, capes are having a comeback! And there’s a perfect leopard coat! Aaahhhh……..

Print, prints, prints: Pucci

Some simple mathematics: summer + prints = Pucci! The founder of the label, Emilio Pucci, started the brand in the forties, but the label became worldwide know in the sixties through famous customers like Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. Characteristic of the label are the Pucci prints: loud, abstract graphic prints in the most vibrant, vivid colours. Groovy! The prints were used on lightweight (unlined) silk dresses and scarves, so the clothes became very popular for travelling and pool side parties. Emilio Pucci died in 1992, but the brand continued with new designers like Christian Lacroix and Matthew Williamson.

If you are as intrigued by Pucci as I am, this August Taschen will release a book about the designer, with hundreds of photographs, drawings, and candid shots from the archive of the Emilio Pucci Foundation. There are two editions: a ‘regular’ one and a limited one of 500 books. The limited edition is bound in an original vintage Pucci fabric and is accompanied by four art prints of original drawings from the designer. I want!

Topshop Fall 2010 preview

Why is it that every time I think: ‘I have all the clothes I could ever dream of, my closet is perfect and from now on I’m going to start saving some cash’, then there’s Topshop with their new collection and I get the feeling I really, really, desperately need a ……… (name the uwearable trend of the season that my future grandchildren probably will find hilarious).

This Fall the cause of all this will be the Topshop collection. These are some of their Lookbook pictures, shot by Franck Sauvaire and styled by Katie Shillingford.

There are four subcollections:

Out Of The Wild: A wild warrior girl in a post-apocalyptic world where fashion survivors battle the elements.
Dark Nouveau: A trip back in time to the dark ages, where the “sinister fairytales of the art nouveau movement” meet the dark and perverse images of illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.
Hi Performance: There’s another arty/conceptual description about this theme, but in normal language: sportswear.
The Outsiders: Mixes Britain’s heritage with modern fashion.

Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

If you want to escape the sun, I suggest to take a trip to photography museum Foam in Amsterdam. My favorite Dutch fashion photography duo, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, have an exhibition of their extensive work. I love it that their pictures are never just “pretty-pretty”, they mix fashion with art and there’s always an element of darkness in their work. The exhibition contains 300 of their most essential images, selected by the duo themselves. They choose the photographs that showed their fascination for people and their aspirations: who are we, how do we want to look en what does that say about our lives and feelings. Oh, Chloë! Is there any girl in the world that has better personal style than her? Not only is she a personal favorite of mine, but at Opneing Ceremony they think the same, because there’s a third collection with her designs for the New York brand. It’s a ‘pre-spring’ 2011 collection (???) and it’s perfect, I want it all. This collection focusses around five prints: leopard, polka dot, paisley, houndstooth and floral, and also contains matching tights. The prints that have been used are by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
