Tim Burton by Tim Walker

The October issue of Harper’s Bazaar has a great fashion spread, influenced by Tim Burton. Tim Burton has made some of my favorite movies (like Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and also worked as a music video director for bands like The Cure and The Killers. This fashion shoot has his name written all over:  the dark, gothic atmosphere, Victorian clothing and a skeleton here and there – oh, and he also appears in some shots. If you want to know more about him, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has an exhibition of his work as a filmmaker, writer, photographer and illustrator. And check out his next project: the Alice in Wonderland movie!

Sea New York Spring Summer 2009

I know it’s a bit late to post pictures of summer clothing (I’m already checking the fall 2009 collections), but this brand is way to pretty to ignore it. The brand is Sea New York (or Sea NY) and their collection contains print dresses, slouchy romper suits and peg leg trousers.

Originally launched by New York-based designer Sean Monahan, Sea New York was designed for his close female friends based on the idea of creating clothes that made girls smile. Since its launch in autumn 2006, the line has developed a following among hip New York girls, including Alexa Chung, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chloe Sevigny. Prices range between £150 and £500.

Like a Virgin Part Two

Once upon a time there was an eighties actress named Molly Ringwald. She always played brilliant roles in cool teenage movies like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. If you haven’t seen these movies, shame on you!

Anyway, I had to think of her when I was listening to the hot new band of the moment: The Virgins. The Virgins make excellent eighties pop music. A bit like Franz Ferdinand, but more poppy and less ‘arty’. The Virgins make the perfect soundtrack for any Molly Ringwald movie!

They are a band from New York City and formed in 2005. They’ve had one self-titled album out in 2008 (with a chewing gum cover to match their bubblegum pop). Some facts: Rolling Stone magazine voted their song  “Rich Girls” as one of the best 100 songs of 2008, model Jessica Stam was seen wearing their T-shirt backstage at a Lanvin show and their songs have been used on the tv-show Gossip Girls.

They’re playing at the Paradiso, Amsterdam on the 11th of April and at Rotown, Rotterdam on the 12th of April. And, if you happen to be in London and plan to go to the Camden Crawl festival, they’re also playing there.
