Cinematic Inspirations – Klute

afbeelding-1I’ve always searched for inspiration in movies. Those with styling and cinematography that adds that extra dimention that makes you almost want to live in the movie. As a child i’d dress up as my favorite characters. Then later on as an adult i’d collect clippings and make folders full of screencaps on my computer and have the pictures inspire me in various ways.

Klute is a movie that i’ve recently watched and that really made an impression on me. I recently read Jane Fonda’s biography on my beach holiday on the Dominican Republic and it made me quite interessted in the movies she’s made, especially those in the 60s/70s. I only knew Barbarella, which is amazing when it comes to style, look and feel.. this one is certainly less bizar and abstract, but it’s mysterious atmosphere, simplicity of  the colors (a typical 70s mix of various shades of brown) and the reminence of post-hippie fashions really make it visually exciting even if not everything is my personal style..it’s exciting because it’s just right.

Kate Moss for Topshop spring 2009: Lingerie & Liberty

News about the collaboration between my favorite highstreet store and my favorite model / style icon.

First, Kate Moss’ design contract for Topshop has been extended for a further three years. Since the start in May 2007, there have been eight seasonal collections. It launched in twenty two countries worldwide and has subsequently become available in Australia, Europe and the United States. Among the “new collections” will be debut accessories and lingerie ranges (from vogue.co.uk).

This is great news, I adore Kate’s style and I collect pretty much everything from her Topshop line. What I don’t understand why the accessories are launched as a “debut”?  The very first collection also had accesories (the swallow necklace), and later collections also had scarves, belts and bags.  And what about the shoes? The belle boots with the zipper on the back are the best boots I’ve ever seen/worn, so please, more shoes!  And I’m also intriged about the lingerie, because Kate doesn’t seem like a lingerie person like Dita von Teese. I once read in an article she wears plain black knickers and no bra. So hmmm, I’m curious what to expect. I guess girly stuff with cute apple/floral/swallow prints and triangle bra’s?

Also there are rumours that Kate has teamed up with London-based Liberty’s print designers for her upcoming Topshop collection. Liberty is a department store in London, England that originated from Arthur Liberty who was the son of a draper. The store was founded as an oriental import emporium and once Liberty saw the quality of his fabrics drop he began to import fresh cashmere, silk and cotton to be hand printed in England. At this time they developed the palette of colors know as “Liberty colors.” They consist mostly of soft and tender colors. In the 1920’s Liberty began to create small floral prints that are now known as “Liberty Prints.”

The prints seem perfect for Kate’s collection! Hmmm, I can imagine Liberty print mini dresses, chiffon pussy bow shirts, playsuits, knickers? The  spring 2009 collection is expected in May 2009.

In love with jumpsuits

I looooooovvvveeeee jumpsuits! The great thing about them is that with one item of clothing you’re fully dressed. Just add a pair of high heels …….and ready to go!  Oh, and I don’t mean the rhinestone ones Elvis wore in the seventies, but the elegant-chic ones that you saw everywhere on the catwalk. Here are some examples.

The House of Viktor & Rolf

It’s winter, it’s sunday, it’s raining/freezing cold, you don’t want to sit on the couch all day, all your girlfriends want to spent quality time with their boyfriends and you live in boring Utrecht……what to do? Well, maybe do something intellectual-arty-grown up: visit a museum! The Central Museum in Utrecht has an excellent exhibition about Dutch fashion designers Viktor and Rolf. The museum owns 29 Viktor and Rolf designs and the exhibition shows a selection of them, plus the famous dollhouse that was earlier on show at the Barbican Art gallery in London.

Courtney Love in Elle magazine

I was happily surprised to see one of my first female style icons on the cover of the januari 2009 issue of Elle UK. And damn yes, she looks great.

It brought back memories of me stealing her style in the early nineties. Ripped up vintage dresses,  little plastic hairclips, white tights, mary janes, smeared make-up, etc. It may not seem such a big deal now, but at the time you had to look like a boy to be taken seriously in the indie scene. So when Courtney Love (at the time the singer/guitarist in Hole) and Kat Bjelland (singer/guitarist of Babes in Toyland) introduced the “kinder-whore” look, it was revolutionary.  So, here are some pics of early Courtney.
