Geometric Hair by Vidal Sassoon

This spring  a documentary and book have been made about Vidal Sassoon, the hairdresser of almost every hip, hot and happening celeb in the sixties. Well, that’s all the information I have. The documentary seems to be made and was shown at a couple of film festivals, but it seems it’s not getting a screening for a wider audience. And absolutely no info on the book…. So, to fill the gap, a tiny compilation of his work.

Viddal Sassoon introduced dark, straight and shiny hair cuts. His haircuts were geometric yet organic, as shown in this video:

One of his most well know clients was fashion innovator Mary Quant.

Another client: actress Nancy Kwan with sleek Vidal Sassoon bob, 1963.

Model Grace Coddington with the Five Point Cut in 1964.

Vidal Sassoon cut actress Mia Farrow’s pixie hair for the 1968 movie Rosemary’s Baby. Cost of the cut $5.000 (!)

How To Do Retro Hairstyles

Always wanted to know how to do look like a glamorous forties Hollywood diva or how to create a sixties ‘Amy’ beehive? This book shows you how to do all the hairstyles of the thirties, forties, fifties and sixties.

With clear, step-by-step instructions, the book explains how to use tongs and different kinds of rollers and how to master the pin curl. The book focusses on fantastic 40’s and 50’s hairdos – victory rolls, waves and pompadours, the fake fringe (bangs) – and shows more than twenty hairstyles called like “The Vixen”, “The Casino Wife” and “For The Boys.” If that wasn’t enough, there’s also tips on accessorising with scarves, flowers and hats.

Some fabulous images from the book:

Lushious

Went to the hairdresser a couple of weeks ago. I have a really nice hairdresser, she doesn’t talk about the weather and  she doesn’t try to change my style. She’s the only person on this earth who has noticed I changed my hair colour from “Scandinavian” to “super light natural blond”. Anyway, we talked about different hair colours and the only colour I like, except blond, is red. Not “orange-copper-fall”-reddish, but bright, fire truck red. And immediately I thought about one of my favorite bands from the 90’s, Lush, and their red haired frontwoman Miki Berenyi.

Lush started in 1987 as a one of many shoegaze bands, but they stood out from the rest because Miki and guitarist Emma Anderson were not one of those “Oh look, a girl on guitar, how cute”-bands, but actually made amazing music and had a no-nonsense approach about it. And as a plus, Miki and Emma both looked gorgeous.

After four brilliant albums (Scar, Spooky, Split and Lovelife), they split up in 1998. Since then Emma started a new Band (Sing-Sing),  but Miki quit the music business and became a magazine editor.

Byebye Farrah

Sad news today. American actress Farrah Fawcett has died of cancer.  Not only was she know for her role in the detective series Charlie’s Angels (the original one, not the recent Drew Barrymore movies), but she was a major fashion inspiration also. Watching old Charlie’s Angels episodes is a great way to get introduced to seventies fashion (high waisted flared jeans, jumpsuits, tube tops, hotpants, love it!). And there was the famous “flick”, her hairstyle that was copied by millions of girls (and by Madonna, remember her hair in the “Hung Up” video?). As a tribute to Farrah, here are some old pictures of her.

Three Days Non-Washing Festival Hair

I found this video about how to wear a headscarf without looking like a granny.

Like everything else eighties, the plaits and headscarf combo is back in a big way this summer. Forget Boy George and Bow Wow Wow, this year’s take on the look is chic, bold and beautiful – and the good news is it only takes 5 minutes, making this the perfect up-do for festivals, holidays and picnics in the park.

I’ve got the scarf, I know how to plaid, now all I need is hair as long as the model in the video……
